Established in 1965, the School of Journalism and Communication has the longest history of communication education and research in Hong Kong. The first Master of Philosophy programme was launched in 1977 by the late Professor Wilbur Schramm, one of the founding fathers of communication studies. It is also the earliest research degree programme in communication studies in Hong Kong.

We have a vibrant undergraduate programme with more than 300 students and five professional-oriented master’s programmes with a total of about 380 students, with specialties in journalism, advertising, corporate communication, global communication, and new media. A doctoral programme was established in 1993. Since 2010, our doctoral students have won 20 top paper awards in major peer-reviewed conferences in the field – ICA, NCA, AEJMC, WAPOR, IAMCR.

In 2012, we established the Centre for Chinese Media and Comparative Communication Research (C-Centre) to promote comparative communication research within Greater China and beyond. The Centre publishes two high quality academic Journals, the Chinese Journal of Communication (indexed in SSCI), and Communication & Society (indexed in TSSCI). We are honored that Prof. Joseph Chan, Director of C-Centre, was elected as ICA fellow in 2014.

The School has accomplished remarkable achievements in the past decades. In 2015, we will organize a series of activities to celebrate its 50 years of success in training quality professional communicators and researchers for the Hong Kong community, and advancing knowledge in various aspects of communication in Hong Kong and other cultures. More than a thousand friends, alumni and scholars will convene at the School to celebrate its anniversary. The list of events in 2015 is as follows:
